Pet Diagnostic Services
Pet Diagnostic Services in Knoxville, TN
When your pet isn't feeling well, answers matter — and speed matters even more. At Lange Animal Hospital, our in-house diagnostic capabilities allow our veterinarians to evaluate your pet's health quickly and accurately, often during the same visit. From digital X-rays and ultrasound imaging to comprehensive bloodwork and lab panels, we have the tools to identify problems early and build an effective treatment plan.
We proudly provide diagnostic services for dogs, cats, avian species, and exotic pets at our Knoxville location.
Digital Radiology (X-Rays)
Our hospital is equipped with digital radiography, giving our veterinary team the ability to capture high-resolution images of your pet's bones, joints, chest, and abdomen within minutes. Digital X-rays produce clearer images than traditional film, require less radiation exposure, and allow our doctors to zoom in on areas of concern for a more detailed evaluation.
We may recommend radiographs to:
- Evaluate bone fractures or joint abnormalities
- Examine the size and shape of the heart and lungs
- Detect foreign objects your pet may have swallowed
- Assess abdominal organs for masses, fluid, or abnormalities
- Monitor the progression of orthopedic or chronic conditions
- Support pre-surgical planning
When needed, digital images can also be shared electronically with veterinary specialists for a second opinion — ensuring your pet gets the most informed care possible.
Ultrasound Imaging
Sometimes we need to see beyond what an X-ray can show. Our ultrasound technology allows us to visualize your pet's internal organs in real time, using high-frequency sound waves to generate a detailed, moving image — all without any incision, radiation, or discomfort to your pet.
Ultrasound is safe, non-invasive, and painless, making it an excellent diagnostic tool for pets of all sizes.
When Would My Pet Need an Ultrasound?
We may recommend an ultrasound exam to:
- Investigate abnormal bloodwork results
- Evaluate the size, shape, and condition of internal organs
- Diagnose heart conditions through echocardiography
- Identify foreign objects in the body
- Monitor the progression of a tumor or growth
- Determine the cause of chronic vomiting, diarrhea, or unexplained weight loss
- Establish a baseline for future comparison
Echocardiography (Heart Ultrasound)
If your pet is experiencing heart or circulatory concerns, we can perform an echocardiogram — a specialized ultrasound that uses color Doppler technology to show blood flow direction and velocity through the heart. This helps our veterinarians detect abnormal valves, structural irregularities, and other cardiac conditions that require timely intervention.
In-House Laboratory
Having an on-site laboratory means we can run critical diagnostics without waiting days for results from an outside facility. Our in-house lab supports same-day testing for dogs, cats, avian species, and exotic pets — which is especially important during urgent or emergency visits.
Our in-house lab capabilities include:
- Complete blood counts (CBC)
- Blood chemistry panels
- Urinalysis
- Fecal parasite screening
- Cytology and ear/skin smears
- Pre-anesthetic bloodwork
- Glucose and electrolyte monitoring
Foravian and exotic patients, rapid in-house diagnostics can be particularly valuable, as these species often mask illness until a condition is advanced. Early detection through lab work can make a significant difference in treatment outcomes
Outside Reference Laboratory
For specialized testing that goes beyond our in-house capabilities, we partner with trusted outside reference laboratories. This gives our team access to an expanded menu of diagnostic tests, including:
- Advanced endocrine panels (thyroid, adrenal, etc.)
- Infectious disease PCR testing
- Histopathology and biopsy analysis
- Allergy testing
- Culture and sensitivity testing
- Specialized exotic and avian panels
Samples are typically collected during your pet's visit and shipped the same day, with results returned as quickly as possible so we can move forward with a diagnosis and treatment plan.
